Miami-Dade’s waste system is changing.
On July 31, 2026, Miami-Dade County unveiled its Zero Waste Master Plan, a long-term roadmap for reducing waste, increasing recovery and reuse, expanding recycling and organics management, and moving toward a more circular economy.
The plan contains 31 coordinated strategies that will be implemented over time.
For businesses, now is a good time to understand the plan and begin learning about the systems and practices that may become increasingly important as implementation moves forward.
Why start with food and organic materials?
Food scraps and other organic materials represent one of the major opportunities to keep valuable resources out of the waste stream.
Miami-Dade’s Zero Waste planning specifically addresses food recovery, composting, organics processing and the infrastructure and policies needed to manage organic materials differently. Organics management, food recovery and composting are prominent components of Miami-Dade’s Zero Waste strategy and are among the areas businesses should begin understanding as implementation moves forward.
These workshops will help businesses understand this part of the Zero Waste transition and identify practical steps they can begin taking now—from food recovery and organics diversion to commercial composting options for Miami businesses—without assuming any particular regulation or mandate has already taken effect.
