Re: County-wide moratorium on selling compost (or plants grown with compost)

WHAT IS GOING ON?

Why are you no longer selling your soil?

We have been instructed by the Miami Dade government that we currently can NOT sell compost or anything grown with compost. So we have stopped all sales and donations. Our Soil-Share Program, which provides free organic soil to non-profit gardens, is also on hold.

However, our composting service is up and running strong. (Both commercial, and residential).

Is this all happening because someone brought a bag of your Fertile Earth Living Soil to City Hall and now there are giant plants coming out of everywhere and they're freaking out because they don't understand how organic soil can be so potent and the plants are coming out of the windows and toilets and maybe the fertilizer companies are going to arrest us all?

That wasn't our first guess. We're thinking more along the lines that there are a lot of regulations out there and the county is working hard to make sense of everything as we attempt to transition to a zero-waste community.  Under current regulations, compost falls under the classification of "Liquid Sewage Waste." This of course is a problem that needs to be addressed.

But Fertile Earth has a long history of compliance and we intend to continue to work with all levels of government. We urge patience.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT

Is this something that we need to organize and protest immediately? Should I tie myself to a pole and cover myself with mustard, or something like that?

No, and please no. There are many people in the government trying to figure it out and make it work, but it takes some time to sort things out. Please give us time, Miami is moving slowly but in the right direction.

I am very frustrated and I want to write something in all caps but the caps-lock key in my key board is broken. What should I do?!

Sorry for your hardship. We recommend visiting our EVENTS page and join us on our next Garden Day. We have lots of educational activities and our garden days are great fun. We highly recommend everyone to put their phones down and get their hands dirty with us for a few hours.

Additionally, if you would like to be active politically, we recommend:

ALSO: Don't forget to compost!!! A simple, tiny change in the way that you discard your "trash" can have a monumental impact down the line.
